2nd Core Course: The Conservation and Management of the Built Heritage

A Core Course on “the Conservation and Management of the Built Heritage’

From: October 3, 2009 to December 7,2009

which took place on October 3rd 2009 in Jerusalem and end on December 7th, 2009 (with a two-week break) . The training course was attended by 11 participants
(architects and engineers, both new graduates and experienced, as well as contractors working in the field of heritage conservation in Jerusalem) . A modular system of training has been envisioned , with both theoretical classroom-based courses and practical training, using the project sites of rehabilitation work of the Old City of Jerusalem Revitalization Programme in the Old City.

The Welfare Association invited 10 local and international experts, with different specializations in the field of Conservation , and the course was divided into main 6 themes as the following :

During the course , the participants were asked to work individually on short exercise to analyze the architectural development for different historical buildings inside the Old City of Jerusalem , beside working as groups on the main case study ( Al –Jawelliah school - Mamluk building , located on the north part of Al – Haram Al –Shareef) , and to do all the historical , architectural , physical and structural analysis for it .
The course was considered either excellent or very good, according to participants' evaluation which was made on the 5th of December .

  • Introduction to Conservation principles and processes , Documentation , Recording and Information Management.
  • Historic Building Materials : Characterization , Scientific Investigations , and Condition Assessment of Masonry Buildings. Beside the conservation of Stone, Plaster and Mortar, Decay , condition assessment and treatment.
  • Historic structures : Assessing Structural Behavior of Buildings , and Introduction to Structural Conservation.
  • Humidity.
  • Site Management planning and management of conservation projects.
  • The last week was for the presenting of seminar results and the course evaluation.
